Bishnoi Village Excursion

The Bishnoi community, settled in the villages south of Jodhpur, has practised ecological conservation as a religious duty for over 500 years. The community's 29 principles — codified by Guru Jambheshwar in 1485 — prohibit the felling of trees and the killing of animals. As a result, the villages are home to extraordinary wildlife: blackbuck, chinkara, peacocks, and demoiselle cranes that walk among the houses with complete confidence.

A half-day excursion to a Bishnoi village is one of the most distinctive experiences available from Jodhpur. The contrast between the living village — potters at their wheels, women weaving on ground looms — and the extraordinary density of wildlife is unlike anything else in Rajasthan. This is not a wildlife reserve; it is an inhabited community where conservation is a way of life.

The drive through the desert scrubland is itself rewarding. The low dunes, acacia groves, and ochre soil are the habitat that produced the fort, the textiles, and the food of Jodhpur. Understanding the landscape changes how you read the city on return.
