The Marwari safa is not decorative — it is a precise piece of engineering. A full formal safa can be 9 metres of fabric, wrapped in a specific sequence of folds that communicates caste, region, and occasion to any Rajasthani who knows the code. Jodhpur's style is distinct from Jaipur's, and a wedding safa looks entirely different from an everyday one.
The session is taught by a practitioner from the old city who has been tying safas his entire life. The instruction is patient and practical — guests leave having tied their own, and having understood why the technique works the way it does.
The second half of the session covers leheriya — the wave-pattern resist tie-dye tradition that produces Jodhpur's most characteristic fabrics. Guests work on a small piece of fabric using the traditional string-resist method, which they take home at the end. The result is imperfect and individual, which is precisely the point.
