Village Safari

Thirty kilometres south of Jodhpur, the landscape opens into the Thar Desert proper — and here the Bishnoi community has lived by a set of 29 ecological principles for over 500 years. Codified by Guru Jambheshwar in 1485, these principles prohibit the felling of trees and the killing of any animal. The result is extraordinary: blackbuck, chinkara gazelle, blue bulls, and demoiselle cranes walk through the villages with complete ease, unafraid of the humans they have lived alongside for generations.

The safari is a half-day excursion in a private jeep from the haveli. The guide — a local with deep roots in the region — takes guests to a working Bishnoi village where the visit is unhurried. You watch potters on hand wheels producing the same forms they have made for centuries, see women in vivid Rajasthani dress weaving on ground looms, and witness the opium ceremony — a traditional Bishnoi greeting ritual offered to honoured guests, steeped in the community's specific protocols of hospitality.

The drive through the desert scrubland is itself rewarding — the low dunes, acacia groves, and ochre soil are the habitat that produced the fort, the textiles, and the food of Jodhpur. Understanding where the city comes from changes how you see it on return.
