Ranisar & Padamsar Lakes

Ranisar and Padamsar are two interconnected artificial lakes constructed in 1459 AD — the same year Rao Jodha founded Jodhpur and began building Mehrangarh Fort. Ranisar was built by Queen Ranisar Devi, and Padamsar by Queen Padmavati. The lakes were created to supply water to the fort and the growing city below, and for centuries served as the primary reservoir for the old city.

Sitting between the fort's base and the old city lanes, the lakes offer one of the most peaceful and photogenic views in Jodhpur — the fort's sandstone cliffs reflected in still water, with the blue city rising behind. They remain largely off the tourist circuit, meaning they are almost always quiet.

The ghats and surrounding area are active places of religious and community life. Early mornings see locals performing puja at the lake edge; the light at this hour — the fort catching the first sun above the water — is extraordinary. Migratory birds use the lakes in winter, making them a worthwhile birding stop alongside Rao Jodha Desert Park.
